Civility Lesson
Civility is defined as courtesy, politeness; a polite act or expression. A few observations about civility:
- The world works better with more civility.
- Civility is something each of us can choose.
- We can choose civility at any moment each day.
The foundation of civility is the ability to shift your focus from your own interests, wants, needs and concerns such that you can hear, understand and tend to the needs and interests of others. Excessive self-focus is so limiting. You are only one person is a vast community of others. When you learn to tend to the needs of others goodness expands.
The key to focusing more on the needs of others is to live with the realization that you and your life are fine just as they are. When you are aware of your abundance you have the freedom to notice the needs of those around you.
You can practice shifting your focus whenever you choose. What needs do you truly have in this very moment? Asking yourself that question may lead to the realization that, despite a tendency to worry about the unknown, in this moment almost every need is being met. Now, consider someone who is nearby. Take a moment to inquire about their welfare. Listen and consider what, if any, contribution you might make to them.
You can make a difference in the world by noticing and caring from someone today.
