Big and Little Self

You may never have considered that you have a “big self” and a “little self”.  Everyone does.

Your “big self” is courageous, noble and determined to do the right thing.  Immediately after 9/11 thousands of young American men and women signed up to join the United States military.  They were incensed that our country was so shamelessly attacked and were inspired to put their lives on the line to do something about it.  They demonstrated the “big self” in action.  Your “big self” is also your best self.

Certain environments encourage you to bring your “big self” to the forefront of your life.  Almost everyone brings out their “big self” when around the people they love.  Parents gladly sacrifice for their children.  Partners selflessly and graciously care for their mate.  Children faithfully care for their elderly parents.  In truth, being inspired by almost any cause will bring out your “big self”.

You also have a “little self” that can be selfish, petty and self-protective.  Just as a cornered animal will become vicious, when you feel trapped and scared your worst traits will rise to the surface.  A friend told me of a time when he had started a new job.  He was so successful that he took business away from his boss.  One day his boss joked about firing him.  My friend had a family to feed and bills to pay.  Without telling his boss, he began setting up his own company and, when he was ready, he left and took all of his business with him.

He wasn’t proud of the way he had behaved but he was scared.  He was in the grip of his “little self”.

Can you see the “big self” and “little self” in you?    The more clearly you see them the better you can manage which runs your life.
