What Kind of Coach Do You Need?
I began my career as a coach over 25 years ago. The concept of a corporate coach was brand new. Now coaches come from every background under the sun. Some came up through human resources. Others were executives who ran their own businesses. Some are trained and certified by a coaching institute. Others, like me, come to coaching with a background in psychology.
Each brings a unique perspective and set of tools based on their training and experience. So, you might want to match your coach with your need. If you are primarily seeking advice and guidance on concrete business issues, someone who has been in your seat before might be the right choice. If you want guidance and insight on organizational design to build culture, consider someone who has done that repeatedly from a human resources seat.
My work focuses on expanding your personal “operating system”. Your computer’s software depends on its operating system. Sometimes you need to update that operating system in order to effectively run new and better software. People are the same way. You have your set of beliefs and experiences that shape how you see the world. All of your possibilities and limitations are determined by that point of view. Until you expand it, you won’t be able to see opportunities that are right in front of you or the solutions to problems that have been nagging you for years.
My background in theology and psychology has provided a toolbox filled with wonderful and helpful tools but my most important qualification is having a very special gift of hearing and understanding others at a very deep level.
Please find someone who is a coach because it is their calling and not just their job.
