Individuality and Civility

  • By Jack Skeen
  • In Blog

One thing that makes America so special is the balance between the rights of the individual and the value of the community.  Each of us is guaranteed certain liberties that allow us to pursue our goals and enrich our lives.  At the same time, we must keep in view the value of the collective whole.  If I pursue my interests in ways that undermine the group, I weaken the very system upon which my rights are built.  If I value the group to the point that individuality is suppressed I undermine the freedom upon which prosperity is built.

I suspect that this balance is not an easy one to strike.  Our forefathers seemed to have found it quite well.  That does not seem to be the case with our present generation.  We are witnessing a nation divided on numerous fronts.  We are separating by race, wealth, and political persuasion.  Each side is taking a radical stance that focuses on their view and may be overlooking the value of coming together around common goals.

We can pull this great country apart.  We have the ability to rip it to shreds by insisting on our point of view without sufficiently valuing the views of those whose lives are very different from ours.  Each of us has a voice.  Each voice should be heard.  It is best heard in a climate of dignity and mutual respect.  It is best heard when everyone recognizes every day the values we share.  We are a great nation because every soul in this country is important.  We must move forward but can only move forward together.

Let’s celebrate those who are different from ourselves.  Let’s listen to their point of view.  Let’s work together to build a system that works better for everyone.
